The Institute provides services in all three major categories of metrology:

fundamental metrology , maintenance and development of national standards, R&D in metrology

dissemination of units - top level calibration of standards and measuring instruments

legal metrology - regulated sphere, type approvals of legal metrology instruments, initial and subsequent verification of measuring instruments, metrological supervision, conformity assessment in metrology

Primary laboratories of the CMI are concentrated in four divisions, Laboratories of Fundamental Metrology in Prague, Regional Inspectorate Prague, Regional Inspectorate Brno and Inspectorate for Ionizing Radiation in Prague.
